Purpose - It is generally recognized that network management is a critical factor for network success. It is also acknowledged that different managerial behaviors are necessary in different network settings. Scholars have explored the relationships between network characteristics and managerial behaviors, but the role of network culture in influencing network managers' activities remains under-investigated. The purpose of this paper is to address this gap. Design/methodology/approach - The analysis is developed through a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis of 18 country-based networks involved in the same EU-funded project. Findings - The results shed light on two different combinations of network culture types and management practices simultaneously leading to high network performance. Originality/value - The paper confirms the existence of a relationship between network management and certain characteristics of the networks, in particular network culture.

During this last past decade, the Internet of Things (IoT) has gained much attention because it encompass intelligent devices such as smart sensors and actuators, which enable a wide range of applications that improve our daily life (e.g. smart agriculture). However, due to the presence of an important number of heterogeneous and resources constrained devices (in terms of memory, CPU and bandwidth) communicating over error-prone and lossy radio channels and often deployed in hostile environments (e.g. war zone), IoT networks are experiencing various network performance problems (e.g. excessive energy consumption resulting from network device failure). In this context, an efficient management of IoT networks is needed in order to ensure good network performances. This has fueled the development of different protocols and frameworks for management of IoT networks. In this paper we present a comprehensive study of representative works on IoT network management. The paper analyzes existing solutions for IoT low power networks management and presents a taxonomy of those solutions. Moreover, this paper also compares existing research proposals on management of IoT low power networks based on different requirements. At the end, this survey identifies remaining challenges for an efficient mangement of IoT low power networks.

This article studies a disaster management network in the state of Gujarat, India. Through social network analysis and interviews, the article examines the governance structure of a disaster management network and identifies factors that affect its effectiveness. Four factors - trust, number of participants in the network, goal consensus and the need for network-level competencies based on the nature of the task - were examined. The article concludes by discussing how the dynamics of these factors affected this particular disaster management network.

Traditional network management approach involves the manage- ment of each vendor's equipment and network segment in isolation through its own proprietary element management system. It is necessary to set up a new network management architecture that calls for operation consolidation across vendor and technology boundaries. In this paper, an architectural model for Intelligent Network Management (INM) is presented. The INM system includes a manager system, which controls all subsystems and coordinates different management tasks; an expert sys- tem, which is responsible for handling particularly difficult problems, and intelligent agents, which bring the management closer to applications and user requirements by spreading intelligent agents through network segments or domain. In the expert system model proposed, especially an intelligent fault management system is given. The architectural model is to build the INM system to meet the need of managing modern network systems.

Collaboration in inter-organizational networks is a major driver of innovation. Nevertheless, methods that practitioners can rely upon for managing innovation networks are still scarce. This research fills this gap by providing an approach that increases innovation output by intensifying collaboration in networks. An action research methodology with two cycles of action was adopted. The first cycle develops a method of network assessment designed to evaluate a net work's collaboration potential. The second cycle iteratively builds on the first cycle and extends the method by a managerial approach to network management on an individual level.

Social network analysis and centrality measures are used with the UCINET software program to analyze the outcomes of an evolving collaborative network through the relationship structures and processes of an intewrganizational governance network. The study data were collected from content analyses of newspapers, situation reports, and organizational documents. In the context of disaster response networks, the structure and performance of the planned networks are compared to the actual networks. The results indicate that the September 11 response network's performance differed from that of the Federal Response Plan network and that the outcomes of the Hurricane Katrina response network showed different structures from those of the National Response Plan. The insights generated about the structural differences between these formal versus informal and planned versus actual networks demonstrate the utility of the measurements of network performance outcomes discussed here.

Network and service management encompasses a set of activities, methods, procedures, and tools, whose ultimate goal is to guarantee the proper functioning of a networked system. Computational tools are essential to help network administrators in their daily tasks, and information visualization techniques are of great value in such context. In essence, information visualization techniques associated to visual analytics aim at facilitating the tasks of network administrators in the process of monitoring and maintaining the network health. This paper surveys the use of information visualization techniques as a tool to support the network and service management process. Through a systematic literature review (SLR), we provide a historical overview and discuss the current state of the art in the field. We present a classification of 285 articles and papers from 1985 to 2013, according to an information visualization taxonomy, as well as a network and service management taxonomy. Finally, we point out future research directions and opportunities regarding the use of information visualization in network and service management.

Software-Defined Networking currently appears to be a major evolution towards network programmability. In this paper, we first analyze the network management capabilities of Open Flow in order to identify the main challenges that are raised for SDN management. We address current deficiencies of SDN management and suggest solutions that incur research directions to be carried out for the management of enhanced SDN.

Companies want to achieve a sustainable financial success through process and performance improvements. Increasing the company’s performance is a good way for sustainable success. Typically, the success is measured by process output metrics. This output mirrors the performance of a company’s processes in the end. It is obvious that for being able to cope with complex business network structures in a derivative supply-demand-structure as well as collaboration cooperation incentives, performance needs to be managed across the whole network to strengthen the own network centrality. The present paper contributes to the development of a new holistic Performance Management in business networks. Thus, a Network Performance Wheel - for a more network oriented approach, and a Process Management Balanced Scorecard - to close the gap between internal and external impacts, are introduced. Also, a PM-VICTORY model is launched for implementing the whole network directed Performance Management.

In order to efficiently diagnose the satellite network, a three level management architecture was proposed and a cooperated-based fault management method was put forward. In this method the traditional fault management method was used through network management technique when a satellite agent could respond to the network management instruction received from the management station. However, if the satellite agent could not respond to the network management demands, the intra-domain cooperation or inter-domain cooperation would be activated. The suspected fault satellite could be tested through cooperation among the satellite agents. The simulation results shows that in the circumstance of the low faulty frequency, the new method could be effectively used in satellite network with short cooperative time and low throughput.
